Autopsies reveal Kasarani victims died from gunshots during Raila Odinga public viewing
Bullets recovered from the victims’ bodies have been handed to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority for forensic analysis, while one body remains unidentified at the City Mortuary.
Autopsy reports on victims who died during public viewings of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga confirm that those who died at Kasarani succumbed to gunshot wounds, according to human rights group Vocal Africa. The findings were presented to the families.
The Kasarani victims have been identified as Vincent Otieno Ogutu, 36, from Umoja 3; Evans Onyango Kiche, 40, from Njiru; and Josfae Jida Burka, 42, from Lakisama.

Evans Kiche died from a single gunshot wound to the head, which caused extensive skull and brain damage, while Vincent Otieno Ogutu succumbed to a chest wound that penetrated his internal organs.
Bullets recovered from their bodies have been handed over to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) for further forensic analysis. One body remains unidentified at the City Mortuary.
"Post-mortem reports indicate that Evans Kiche died from a single gunshot wound to the head, causing extensive damage to the skull and brain. Vincent Atieno succumbed to a gunshot wound to the chest, with the bullet penetrating his internal organs," said Hussein.
In a separate incident at Nyayo Stadium on Friday, October 17, Josephine Anjao Akeng’o, 41, from Kibra, died during a stampede as mourners queued to view Odinga’s body near Gate Five.
The second victim from the same incident remains unidentified. Officials said 163 people were injured, with at least 34 referred to hospitals for further treatment.
Earlier, in Homa Bay, a woman identified as Yvonne Lucy was fatally struck by a stray bullet outside Homa Bay Police Station during a vigil for Odinga.
She was hit while walking home from the vigil after a police officer fired a warning shot to disperse a crowd. The officer involved has been arrested and is under investigation by IPOA.
Vocal Africa CEO Hussein Khalid condemned the use of lethal force at all events and stressed the need for accountability.
